People are let go in relationships and employment every day. You can choose to suffer or you can seize the opportunity to ask for what you want. Most employees are in such a daze after being let go that they are not thinking clearly. Don’t waste time worrying or feeling sorry for yourself, and don’t feel like you just have to get it over with, sign the document and take what is offered to you. While there’s no guarantee that there’s any flexibility with the Company’s offer, you have nothing to lose by making a request to your Company and negotiating a better package. Maybe it’s a longer duration of health care coverage. Maybe it’s more money to get you through the short term. Whatever it is, it doesn’t hurt to ask. If you’ve been offered any outplacement benefits, take them and use them. Not only will your participation distract and distance you from the emotional undercurrent of your termination, but you may be able to market a new skill which will make you more attractive to prospective employers.
It is important for you to remember that if you’ve been handed a release of claims and asked to sign an agreement, you are giving up your right to sue in exchange for certain benefits. Make sure the benefits that you are receiving meet your specific needs. Oftentimes companies will be creative and alter the package to suit your requests. The fewer the number of people that are impacted in a reduction in force and severed, the higher the likelihood that you can have a meaningful discussion about the terms and conditions of your offer.
